A lmost all employees of the German Association for the protection of forest (SDW) currently work in the home office because of corona-crisis. We are able continuing to work on the importance of forests.
But: Many forest educators and non-profit institutions that provide forest-related educational work are severely affected by the prohibitions on contacts and school closures. They often get their main income through educational activities with students. The latest school-decrees of German federal states prohibit such events until the end of the school year - in other words, until August / September. For many, this loss of income means financial emergency. After summer holidays there would probably not be enough environmental education actors available for schools. Such extracurricular educational activities, which are important for high-quality education and part of the educational national and international mandate for education for sustainable development (ESD), could no longer be sufficiently implemented.
An initiative of the SDW wants to support the environmental education actors. SDW prepared a letter with demands to all Ministers of Education of the federal states of Germany. You can find the letter in English here:
